Show Open & Package:
Colbert obviously needed to be front and center in the open, so we opted for a green-screen set with lots of camera toys -- jib arms, dollies, turntables -- to push the faux drama and mimic other personality-driven news clichés. I then matched Colbert’s footage and a Maya-built eagle into a 3D tower of flags, patriotic imagery and made-up words. The open is capped by the eagle popping up from the bottom of the screen, baring its claws, then effectively devouring the audience as his beak wipes to reveal the live show.
One of my proudest Colbert additions was “grippy,” the last of the tower of adjectives in the original show open. I wish I had come up with “truthiness”, but alas, Colbert and the show’s writers take credit for that.
