Busboy Productions & Comedy Central

The Colbert Report

Project overview:

Just pure fun creating this package — from shooting Colbert ad-libbing eagle poses on a turntable while singing Van Halen’s “Jamie’s Crying,” to designing a logo with Colbert’s direction, “it needs to be as big and ugly as my ego.”

Armed with this, plus, “I’ll leave you with one thought: eagles. Big ones. And no bears,” we went off and attempted to create an open as funny, unpredictable and hyperbolic as the host.

Show Open & Package:

Colbert obviously needed to be front and center in the open, so we opted for a green-screen set with lots of camera toys -- jib arms, dollies, turntables -- to push the faux drama and mimic other personality-driven news clichés. I then matched Colbert’s footage and a Maya-built eagle into a 3D tower of flags, patriotic imagery and made-up words. The open is capped by the eagle popping up from the bottom of the screen, baring its claws, then effectively devouring the audience as his beak wipes to reveal the live show.

One of my proudest Colbert additions was “grippy,” the last of the tower of adjectives in the original show open. I wish I had come up with “truthiness”, but alas, Colbert and the show’s writers take credit for that.

Promo Package:

The Colbert open was a huge hit with fans, critics and with the folks at Colbert, who pushed Comedy Central to work with us to design and build the network promo package. The challenge was to find a way to balance out Colbert’s hyperbolic, patriographics with Comedy Central’s urban grafitti hip.
