HBO

Channel Package, v.2

Project overview:

After the success in redesigning the on-air look for HBO in 2002, HBO hired us (my former company, Verb!) to do the same again in 2006. For this package, I offered a shift in brand strategy for HBO: to embed live footage of their incredible lineup of properties directly into the design of the “building blocks” elements of the network. This would allow HBO to leverage the success of their huge hits to introduce new shows in a more powerful way.

Render Central:

In the past, HBO had avoided a network approach to using properties and talent as part of their navigation system. Up until the middle 2000s, HBO had been primarily movies and sports, which made custom-built navigation incredibly difficult, given that most of the programming was not repeated throughout the season. But with the rise of HBO’s new serial megahits—Six Feet Under, the Sopranons and Sex and the City—the time was right for leveraging content at every level.

To that end, we pitched an idea that would incorporate up-to-date footage and upcoming-show teaser clips directly into a richl-designed three-dimensional world. The creative team at HBO was thrilled. The production team responsible for building navigation weekly was not.

Rather than giving up on the creative we had proposed, we set about soliving the problem by turning the AfterEffects / Final Cut system we had created into a self-running application. All an editor would have to do is cut clips to markers, export a movie, and the application would automatically pull in the footage,  incorporate it into the next and tonight-ons, render out versions and e-mail them out for legal and creative approvals.

HBO Multiplex:

The success of the core graphics package resulted in being awarded the package design navigation and IDs for of all of HBO’s multiplex channels: HBO2, HBO Signature, HBO Comedy, HBO Zone, and HBO Family. In addition, we were asked to design a package for HBO Latino.

Brandbook:

In an effort to have more consistency between HBO’s print and digital side, they had us create a “Brand Book,” and toolkit, which detailed the brand vibe and its inspiration, as well as providing a toolkit of parts ready for use in any medium.
